Ron Walker, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation the organizing body of the Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park Melbourne has announced this afternoon that he will retire from his position next year.

The 75 year old, who has just agreed a contract extension with Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone beyond 2015 confirmed the news in n interview with an Australian news website. He said:

'I'll retire next year, after 20 years of the Albert Park race'. He went on to say: 'I'm 75 this year and it's good governance to let someone fresh take the reins'.

Last weekend's Australian Grand Prix was won in style by Nico Rosberg as Formula One entered the new era of energy efficient racing. The race in Melbourne has always been a favourite among drivers and fans alike and it is always a great place to start the season.

Despite being disqualified from the race one of the stand out performances of the season opener was from Red Bull Racing's Daniel Ricciardo who drove superbly which was a fantastic advertisement for the Grand Prix and indeed the sport as a whole in Australia.

Walker has selected Cricket World Cup chairman John Harden to replace him. Walker's decision now has to be approved by the board of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
