Mercedes rack up the miles on day one in Jerez

(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team)

Reigning world champions the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team hit the ground running on the opening day of winter test in Jerez on Sunday.

Nico Rosberg was in action for the Silver Arrows as the German took to the track in the W06 on the day that the team publicly revealed their 2015 challenger which they hope will help them to secure a second successive Drivers and Constructors championship following an utterly dominate season in 2014.

The F1 W06 Hybrid took to the circuit at 9AM local time with Rosberg completing a series of long runs in the morning ending the session on top of the time sheets having completed 60 laps. In the afternoon session, the German completed 97 laps and ended the day in third place with a fastest time of 1m 23.160s.

Speaking following the opening day of testing, Rosberg stated:

That was a great start to the winter testing. In the beginning it’s all about reliability and we managed to do a lot of mileage today.

The guys in the factories built a complete new car and now we come here and it’s working great, so the team did a fantastic job over the winter. I was able to do some good long runs on the first day and that’s really amazing.

We have such a great team and this is what makes me really happy. As a driver, you always want to find out how quick you are compared to the others – but that will have to wait until qualifying in Melbourne. The next testing days are all about making sure we know the car inside out and we’ve made a good start with that today.

World champion Lewis Hamilton will be in the on Monday.
