F1 TV audience drop blamed on Vettel dominance

(Ben Johnston 2014)

The worldwide television viewing figures for the 2013 Formula One season were released today by Formula One Management and it does not make for good reading.

Last season, the sport had a total TV audience of 450 million compared to 515 million in 2012. Speaking about the figures Bernie Ecclestone said that they were not surprised by the fall in numbers. The main reason for the drop off in TV viewers was due to Sebastian Vettel's dominance of the sport. The German secured his fourth consecutive Drivers championship last season.

Despite the global decrease, there was some good news too as the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy all recorded increases in their TV viewers. It is a major boost for the sport particularly in the US as it looks to build on the success of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The America's in Austin, Texas.

This season, Formula One has the potential to reach a completely new audience as people who may not  have followed the sport in recent years may decide to follow it this season due to the new engine era in the sport as it has become more relevant to the general public as the new cars have smaller 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged engines and it has also become more fuel and energy affective with the introduction of the new Energy Recovery System.
