Fuel economy key to 2014 season but Lewis Hamilton will not be held back

(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS)

Mercedes technical director Paddy Lowe has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will not be held back from getting the most out of his car this season despite there being greater importance to save fuel under the new 2014 technical regulations.

The new regulations mean that drivers will have to complete a full race distance with a fuel load of 100KG.

During last season Hamilton frequently came on the radio to the Mercedes team looking to push the car harder however speaking ahead of the start of the second winter test Lowe said that he believed that the media are over playing the fact there is less fuel this season and that he hopes that the new fuel regulations will not be a dominating factor in determining the outcomes of races.

The fact of the matter is that this season with the introduction of the new 1.6 litre V6 turbo charged engines the new cars will become more fuel efficient and due to them being smaller it is not necessary for the cars to have large fuel tanks.

Lowe went on to say that it has been the case in Formula One for year's that driver's have had to conserve fuel and their tyres.

Mercedes have confirmed that Hamilton will drive on Wednesday morning in Bahrain and will alternate day's with Nico Rosberg during the week.
