Friday Free Practice Report from Pirelli

(Pirelli Motorsport Media)

Pirelli have brought the Yellow Soft and the Red Super Soft compound for the final round of the FIA Formula One championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit.

A total of 6.197KM were completed over the course of Friday's running across both the Soft and Super Soft compound tyre's. In Free Practice One, Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team's Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of 1m 43.476s on a set of used Pirelli Soft tyre's.

In the second session, Hamilton set the fastest time of 1m 42.113s on a brand new set of the Pirelli Super Soft tyre's.

Pirelli reported slight graining on the right front of the Super Soft compound. In this afternoon's session the team's concentrated on their car set-up's and race strategies along with their high fuel long run pace and maximizing the performance of the two tyre compounds.

A total number of 19 sets of the Super Soft tyre's were used over the course of the day while 62 sets of the Soft compound tyre were used.

The highest number of consecutive laps on the Super Soft tyre was 19 while 31 consecutive laps were completed on the Soft compound tyre,

Speaking about the opening day of running in Abu Dhabi Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery stated:

'We’ve got off to the start we expected in Abu Dhabi: the race that will decide the world championship. Wear and degradation is low on the soft tyre, which we expect to be the main race tyre.

With a gap of just over a second between the two compounds, we think that the supersoft will be the best choice for qualifying, but this time difference leaves plenty of strategy options open: with perhaps some interesting gains to be made by running the reverse strategy and using the soft tyre first at the start of the race.'
