Hamilton to keep 44 next season

(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team)

Newly crowned 2014 Formula One world champion, Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team's Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he will continue to use his car number 44 despite being allowed to take the number 1 on his W06 for 2015 as world champion.

Ahead of the start of the 2014 season drivers were asked to select a number between 2 and 99 which they will use for the remainder of their career and Hamilton picked the number 44 as he had used through out his racing career starting in Go-Karting. Sebastian Vettel who used the number 1 this season as reigning world champion will use the number 5 which he nominated prior to the start of the season.

The last time the number 1 was missing from the Formula One grid was in 1994 following reigning world champion Alain Prost's retirement from the sport.

For the 1994 season, Damon Hill competed in Formula One using the number zero.
