Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff believes that the new radio communications ban with cause controversy. FIA Formula One race director Charlie Whiting wrote to the teams earlier this week that under Article 20.1 of the Formula One Sporting Regulations which states that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided.
Whiting went on to remind to the teams that data transmission from pit to car is specifically prohibited under Article 8.5.2 of the FIA Technical Regulations.
As of next weekend's race in Singapore their will be less radio traffic heard between teams and drivers. Wolff stated:
'This is a complex and controversial decision which will require a significant effort from the teams to understand how best we can work around it. '
Wolff went on to say:
'The directive is not yet fully clear and there will inevitably be some controversy, so it will need further clarification as to how much the essential on-track procedures will be affected - particularly before the start of the race.'
Radio communication is, as Wolff stated extremely important for the driver's at the start of the Grand Prix event as it let them know how the car was behaving on the way to the grid but the teams will now have to come up with a new way of dealing with these messages.
Teams will still be able to communicate any issues with the car over the radio to the driver.
