Aerodynamics and Cooling were key to Mercedes success in 2014

Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Executive Director (Technical) Paddy Lowe has revealed that aerodynamics played a key part in the Brackley outfits success in 2014.

Lowe revealed that aerodynamics were more crucial in 2014 then the new 1.6 litre V6 turbo charged power unit. The team have been credited with produces the best power unit in Formula One from last season with Mercedes powered cars finishing 1,2 and 3 in the season finale in Abu Dhabi in November.

Lowe, who joined Mercedes from McLaren in June 2013 which is when the 2014 front suspension was being produced.

He also believes that the where the cooling around the W05 played a key role in the success that they had in 2014. In the packaging of the V6 unit the team were able to reduce drag and by doing so this meant that cooling was more efficient.

Mercedes head into the pre-season test period which kicks off from February 1st in Jerez, Spain as clear favourites however they have named the Williams Martini Racing Team as a rival for them to watch this season following the Grove based outfit’s fantastic finish to the 2014 season.

Mercedes and Williams collected a combined total of 40 podiums over the course of the 2014 Formula One season, while the Sahara Force India Formula One Team secured one podium, while McLaren secured two podium finishes in the opening race of the season giving Mercedes 43 podium finishes over the course of the 2014 F1 season.
