Formula One's top teams will not run three cars in 2015 according to McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier in response to a tweet by former Williams chairman Adam Parr who claimed that seven of the Formula One teams on the grid were preparing to run a third car in 2015 amid reports that some of the smaller outfits on the grid are struggling financial and may not be on the grid next season.
Ferrari team principal Marco Mattiacci was asked over the Italian Grand Prix race weekend about the possibility of his outfit running a third car in the future to which the Italian replied:
'On third cars, it is an option but I'm very focused on making sure my two cars work. So I don't want to think about a third one'
It is not the first time that the idea of three car teams being in F1 as Ferrari had wanted to run Moto GP star Valentino Rossi in a third car a number of years ago after the Italian had tested for the Italian team however he never made the switch to Formula One and remains focused on the challenges of the Moto GP championship.
Formula One is trying to bring in a budget gap and running a third car would add to the operating cost for the teams and this is something that they do not want to do.
The Formula One teams have also rejected the idea of running 'customer' cars where they would supply new privateer team's with chassis' and technology to run cars like the Honda did with the Super Aguri Formula One team in 2006 when the team basically ran a year old Honda chassis.
