Spanish Grand Prix organisers seeking name change

(Mercedes AMG F1 Team)

Spanish Grand Prix organisers are seeking a name change for their event. The Circuit de Catalunya has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix every year since 1991. The circuit was renamed Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya. Speaking to Spanish media on the eve of the 2014 event, race organiser Salvador Servia stated that as a 'brand' Barcelona outsells Spain.

Servia now wants the Grand Prix to be officially re-branded the 'Barcelona Grand Prix'. Despite wanting the race to be renamed any decision will not be taken about it until 2016 which is when the current contract with the FIA expires.

Servia has stated that if the name change is approved the new official name for the event for be the Gran Premio de Barcelona.
