Hamilton fastest in final practice as Rosberg halted by gearbox issue

Mercedes AMG F1 Team's Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in this morning's final free practice session before this afternoon's qualifying session for tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The 2008 world champion set a benchmark time of 1m 25.519s to finish the session just 0.412s ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

The Williams Martini Racing Team had a very strong session this morning as Valtteri Bottas finished the session in third place just ahead of his team mate Felipe Massa as the Grove based outfit showing get pace so far this weekend.

While Lewis Hamilton topped the time sheets this morning his team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg could only complete  three installation laps as the German had an electronics problem with his gearbox however Mercedes Executive Director (Technical) Paddy Lowe does not believe that Rosberg will receive a penalty.

McLaren's Jenson Button continued to show that the Woking based outfit are improving their performances as the 2009 world champion finished the session in 5th place 0.723s behind Hamilton while reigning world champion Infiniti Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel was in 6th place.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was 7th for the Italian team so the Finn will be looking for some improvements ahead of this afternoons qualifying session.

Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat ended the session in 8th place and he will receive a ten place grid penalty after the team were forced to change an engine. Daniel Ricciardo was 9th fastest in the second RB10 for Infiniti Red Bull Racing so it would look like Sebastian Vettel has a slight advantage over Ricciardo so far this weekend.

Nico Hulkenberg was 10th for the Sahara Force India Formula One Team while his team mate Sergio Perez missed much of the session as a result of getting stuck in second gear. The Mexican finished the session in 13th place.

Kevin Magnussen finished the session eleventh place in the second McLaren while the Sauber F1 Team's Esteban Gutierrez finished the session in 12th place.

Toro Rosso's Jean Eric Vergne was 14th fastest and finished the session just ahead of the Sauber F1 Team's Adrian Sutil. The Marussia F1 Team did a great job as Jules Bianchi finished the session in 16th place finishing the session just ahead of Pastor Maldonado in the first of the Lotus E22's. 

The Caterham F1 Team's Kamui Kobayashi finished the session in 18th place finishing the session just ahead of Romain Grosjean in the second Lotus.

Max Chilton was 20th in the second Marussia while Marcus Ericsson rounded out the time sheets in 21st place while Nico Rosberg did not set a time.

Qualifying for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix gets underway this afternoon from 1PM (UK Time)
