Australia's first Formula One champion Sir Jack Brabham dies aged 88

Australia's first ever Formula One world champion Sir Jack Brabham has passed away following a long illness it was confirmed tonight. 

Brabham, who was born in 1926 was a former Royal Australian Air Force mechanic and began his Formula One career in the 1940's where he drove the the Cooper Racing Team before going on to set up his own Brabham Racing Team for whom he won the 1966 Formula One world championship.

Brabham remains to this day the only team owner/driver to have won the world championship in his own car. 

Brabham won the Formula One world championship three times in 1959, 1960 and finally in 1966 with his own team. 

He is survived by his second wife Lady Margaret and his son's from his first marriage to Betty, Geoff, David and Gray. His son's followed in their father's footsteps by being successful in Motorsport.
