Red Bull Racing should be able to close the gap to Mercedes this weekend as their engine supplier Renault have said that they are hoping for 'promising progress'.
The Milton Keynes based outfit head to the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya 97 points behind championship leaders Mercedes. Speaking about their power unit, Remi Taffin, Renault's head of track side operations said:
'They are energy sensitive, though, so in the race it is always going to be important to have the power unit working right.
But ahead of Montreal we want to have something that is very close to 100 per cent. All in all, it is looking promising. But we mustn't forget about reliability. However, I think Renault has never been as pushy as we are at the minute looking at reliability.'
Engine homologation is currently in place in Formula One however Taffin has said that despite this the engine manufacturer will be able to get more performance from the engine by evaluating the software that is used to run the new 1.6 litre V6 engine and they will also be upgrading their hardware over the course of the 2014 season.
Renault will also be working closely with oil supplier Total which will help the French manufacturer get the best performance out of the new engine format.
Red Bull will be hoping that they can return to the podium this weekend in Spain as they attempt to pull away from Ferrari in the Constructors championship.
