Nico Rosberg has signed a new two year contract with the Mercedes AMG F1 Team according to the BBC. The German has been with the Brackley based squad since they made their return to Formula One as a constructor in 2010 having purchased the 2009 championship winning Brawn GP team.
Last season, Rosberg took his first Grand Prix victory at the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. This season, the German started the season off well by taking victory at the opening race of the campaign at the Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park, Melbourne.
Since that opening race, Rosberg has finished in second place behind team mate Lewis Hamilton in the last four Grand Prix and heading into this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix three points behind Lewis Hamilton who is currently leading the championship. In a statement released by a Mercedes spokesman he confirmed:
'We have long-term relationships with both our drivers.' The news of the deal puts an end to recent speculation that Fernando Alonso could join the Brackley based outfit. During a trip to a Mercedes car plant in Spain this week, Daimler chairman, Dr Dieter Zetsche was quoted as praising Alonso which triggered speculation that Alonso could be on his way to the Silver Arrows as he is apparently getting impatient with the lack of progress at Ferrari.
However, what the media did not report is that Dr Zetsche stated that his team have two of the best drivers in Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
