(Sauber F1 Team)
Scuderia Ferrari technical director James Allison has
dismissed Infiniti Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner’s idea of banning
the use wind tunnel’s in Formula One as a way of reducing operating costs in
Formula One.
Horner’s idea has been welcomed by the both the Sahara Force
India Formula One Team (who are using the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne along
with their own) and the Lotus F1 Team. However Allison believes that the CFD or
Computational Fluid Dynamics is not yet reliable enough to be used as a stand-alone
replacement.
Allison went on to say that the technology is not yet ready
for Formula One to rely on CFD design. The Manor F1 Team relied on CFD design
and do not yet have the use of a wind tunnel.
A number of the big team’s rent out their wind tunnels and
that is exactly what Toyota Motorsports has done with the Sahara Force India
Formula One Team.
