FIA president Jean Todt has apparently come under pressure to ban alcohol sponsorship in Formula One as the EU pushing for a blanket ban on alcohol sponsorship across all sports. However, is it really up to the the governing body of one of the world's leading sports to dictate to the their teams where they can and cannot get their income from?
Tobacco advertising was banned from Formula One at the end of 2006. McLaren, Ferrari and Renault all had tobacco sponsorship so had to fill the void left from the exit of that backing.
Alcohol sponsorship has become a key revenue stream for Formula One with the Williams team confirming at the start of the year a title sponsorship agreement with Martini with the outfit being renamed as Williams Martini Racing ahead of the start of this season and has helped the team to rediscover the some of the success that they had during the mid 1990's.
McLaren Mercedes have whiskey producer Johnnie Walker as a major backer while the Sahara Force India Formula One team announced this season that they had signed a major sponsorship agreement with alcohol brand Smirnoff.
If alcohol sponsorship was to be banned in sport it cause severe financial difficulties for teams in Formula One which in the current climate which has seen both the Caterham and Marussia F1 Team's enter administration. It is not up to the FIA to decide where a team receives their income from and if that is through alcohol branding that should be ok.
The team's who have alcohol sponsorship also have drink aware and responsible drinking as a key component of their agreements with these alcohol partners.
Formula One runs a campaign called 'Bernie says: 'Think before you drive' a message that appears all F1 circuits on the calendar.
Former Formula One world champion Mika Hakkinen is also a safe driving ambassador for Johnnie Walker who become a partner of Formula One with a new drink responsible campaign called 'Join the Pact'.
So the sport is doing everything in their power to promote responsible drinking, If alcohol sponsorship was to banned in F1 what would come next? A ban on energy drink sponsorship? That would cause HUGE problems for the sport
