McLaren-Honda Racing Director Eric Boullier has stated that GP2 driver and McLaren test driver Stoffel Vandoone's test in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and Wednesday was just that a test as the team evaluated their new Honda power unit before it makes its 2015 debut.
McLaren CEO Ron Dennis confirmed over the weekend that there are possibly four drivers in contention for a race seat with the Woking based outfit next season. However Mr Boullier that stated that as far as he is concerned Vandoorne would be better off remaining in the GP2 championship to gain more experience and to focus on winning the GP2 championship.
Speaking to the official Formula One website, Mr Boullier stated:
'He is one of our young drivers. He actually did very well in the second part of the GP2 season, so I think it is a reward for him to be here and be part of this new historical partnership with Honda.'
McLaren's 2014 drivers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen are waiting to hear news as to whether or not they will be retained for next season as the Woking based outfit embark on a new era with Honda.
It is believed that one of the McLaren seats will go to former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso who left the the Maranello based outfit last weekend following the Formula One season finale in Abu Dhabi.
