McLaren Group Chairman Ron Dennis believes that Formula One is going down the right path by becoming more relevant to road car technology and that the critics of the era of the sport need to give it more time before they can truly say for sure that they don't like the new generation of Formula One as we are only three race's into the season. Speaking in Bahrain, Dennis said:
'There has to be a time, and I think that time is now, when we take a more socially-responsible position. The simple fact is that we live in a world where resources are depleting and the environment is being threatened. Yes, we are Formula 1, yes we are the pinnacle of motorsport, but being the pinnacle of motorsport means we have to have the latest technology'
Dennis' comments come as his team have made a great start to the 2014 Formula One season, despite both Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button retiring from the race in Bahrain, the team are currently third in the Constructors championship following an extremely strong start to the season. Jenson Button said after Sunday's race that the Woking based outfit are the second fastest team behind the Mercedes team.
Dennis believes that it is no coincidence that the team's that are complaining about the new regulations are also the team's who are struggling to be competitive so far this season. Dennis went on to say that the new regulations were brought into force with the agreement of all the teams and that using their lack of competitiveness to try and change the rules is not right.
Dennis was asked about the comments that Sebastian Vettel made about the sound of the new engines and he said that Vettel 'Should reflect on the dominance that he has enjoyed' and as champion he should not be disrespectful to the obligations that have been placed on him as world champion.
