Pirelli question tyre blanket ban

(Sauber F1 Tem)

Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembrey has questioned the FIA's decision to ban tyre blanket's from 2015 onwards. Speaking about the ban on Friday in Bahrain he said:

'Working with no tyre blankets is a very big problem, It is not an issue with the compounds, it is more to do with stopping a tyre becoming a balloon, and becoming undriveable or dangerous.'

The problem with no having no tyre blanket's is that that it would cause issues with the tyre pressures which could result in tyre deflations and failures like we saw at last season's British Grand Prix. Hembrey believes that if the tyres were larger than a blanket ban could be introduced however he feels that designing a larger tyre ahead of 2015 is unrealistic.

If the FIA push ahead with the proposed ban they run the risk of a repeat of what happened at the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis in 2005 a race which saw only six car's take part in the race after the Michelin supplied teams pulled out of the race over safety concerns.

If a similar situation were to happen now it would be catastrophic as there is only one tyre supplier in Pirelli which could mean that a race would not go ahead due to safety issues. It will be interesting to see what happens as whether or not the FIA decide the reverse the ban on tyre blankets.
