FIA open investigation into Sergio Perez's grid penalty

(Sahara Force India Formula One Team)

The FIA race stewards in Spielberg have confirmed that they will investigate Sahara Force India's Sergio Perez's five place grid penalty for this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix after the Mexican was found to have caused the last lap accident that forced him and Williams Martini Racing's Felipe Massa to retire from the race.

The decision to look at the penalty handed to Perez comes following a request from the Silverstone based outfit who want the stewards to look at 'new elements' that have come to light. Should the team's appeal be successful then Perez will start Sunday's race at the Red Bull Ring however if the team are unsuccessful Perez will have to serve his five place penalty.

A decision will be made following a meeting of the Austrian Grand Prix race stewards on Friday.
