Refuelling won't happen if it proves to be too expensive

(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team)

Mercedes Head of Motorsport Toto Wolff has warned that refuelling will not return to Formula One unless it is cost effective.

It was announced on Friday that refuelling will return to Formula One in 2017 for the first time since the 2009 season. Wolff has explained however that the teams want to come up with a way of safely conducting a fuel and tyre stop in the same time that it currently takes, 2-3s.

The reasoning behind bringing back refuelling is to increase the spectacle for the fans and Wolff believes that if it can be done it will be spectacular.

It has also been agreed that the sport will increase the width of both the front and the rear wing of the chassis. Wolff concluded by saying that teams have been given six months to come up a design for the cars that would suit everyone.
