The Williams Martini Racing team have confirmed that Rob Smedley will attend this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix making his first appearance as the teams new Head of Vehicle Performance having joined the Grove based team from Ferrari where he was Felipe Massa's race engineer.
Smedley officially started work at Williams on Monday. The Englishman will run the pit-wall at the all Grand Prix from this weekend and during the race's he will be in the role of senior race engineer and will report to technical director Pat Symonds.
Smedley will take over the role from engineer Rod Nelson who will work at the factory and at testing, he will operate the control room at the factory and will work closely with Smedley.
Smedley will once again team up with Felipe Massa as the pair worked together at Ferrari where Smedley was Massa's race engineer. The pair's partnership started at the 2006 European Grand Prix and is one of the longest driver/engineer partnerships in Formula One history lasting a total of 135 Grand Prix.
Smedley began his Formula One career with the Jordan Grand Prix team in 2002 where he worked as a data acquisitions engineer before becoming race engineer. At the end of that year he moved to Ferrari as test team engineer.
His arrival at Williams is aimed to improve communication between the track and the factory.
