Ferrari's Fernando Alonso came out on top in this morning's first practice session ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The Spaniard set a fastest time of 1m 17.238s to finish the session just 0.016s ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton while Nico Rosberg was third fastest in the second Mercedes.
Despite topping the time sheet this morning, it wasn't all plain sailing for the Ferrari team as Kimi Raikkonen was forced to sit out a large part of the session after losing power early on in the session. However once the Finn got out on track he managed to set the 9th fastest time just ahead of the Toro Rosso of Jean Eric Vergne.
Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest for Red Bull Racing while Valtteri Bottas continued to show that the FW36 has good pace as the Finn set the fifth fastest time of the session, just ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull. It was a disappointing session for Felipe Massa in the second Williams however as the Brazilian, who finished the Monaco Grand Prix in 7th place suffered a KERS failure and as a result finished the session down in 17th place.
It was a good morning for McLaren as Jenson Button finished the session in 7th place just ahead of team mate Kevin Magnussen.
The Sahara Force India F1 Team who are looking to continue their strong start to the 2014 season had a productive session as Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez ended the morning in 11th and 12th place respectively just ahead of the Sauber of Adrian Sutil who finished the session in 13th place for the Swiss based team.
After a strong start to the session, it turned into a difficult morning the Lotus F1 Team as Romain Grosjean finished the session in 14th place while Pastor Maldonado who appeared to be really fighting the car ended the session in 16th place just behind Daniil Kvyat in the second Toro Rosso.
Esteban Gutierrez was 18th in the second Sauber while Jules Bianchi, the star of Monaco two week's ago finished the session the best placed of the 'new teams' despite ending the morning early after contact with the wall. He managed to get the car back to the pits under its own power which meant that the team did not lose too much time and they should have the car repaired on time for the second session the afternoon.
Max Chilton was 20th in the second Marussia while Marcus Ericsson ended the session in 21st place just ahead of Caterham team mate and reserve driver America's Alexander Rossi who was taking part in his first Free Practice session of 2014 in place of regular driver Kamui Kobayashi. Rossi had been faster then Ericsson but was just pipped in the closing stages of the session.
Free Practice two gets underway at 7PM (Irish time) Live on Sky Sports F1 HD and BBC Three.
