The FIA have announced that they will meet with Formula One team managers on February 21 during the second winter test in Bahrain to discuss ways to spice up the final part of qualifying for the fans.
The FIA are worried that drivers that make it into Q3 will opt not to run in order to conserve their tyre's for the race. Tyre wear could be a big concern for the teams this season as the sport enters into the new era of energy saving and smaller engines.
The FIA have laid out a number of proposals that will be put the teams. The first is that Pirelli would allocate extra 'qualifying tyre's' that would be handed back to the FIA at the end of the session which would allow drivers to go flat-out in the final part of qualifying safe in the knowledge that it would not affect their race start.
Another possible rule tweak is that the final part of qualifying would be extended to allow teams extra time to run their cars in the final session. Any rule changes put forward will have to get the consent of all of the team's on the grid, they would then have to put to a vote of the FIA Commission before finally being ratified by the World Motorsport Council before coming into force for the first race of the new season on March 16.
