Caterham F1 Team owner Tony Fernandes has admitted that Heikki Kovalainen's poor performances for the Lotus F1 Team when the Finn filled in for his countryman Kimi Raikkonen who sat out the final two Grand Prix of last season lead to the Leafield team to go with another driver pairing.
Kovalainen, had been tipped to rejoin the Caterham race set up however, the team went with Kamui Kobayashi and rookie driver Marcus Ericsson.
Kamui Kobayashi has reportedly paid the team $1 million for the drive with money donated by his fans. Kovalainen had always said that he was not willing to pay for a drive.
Fernandes has said that it was a 'cold process' parting company with Kovalainen after the Finn was instrumental when the team entered F1 in 2010.
Kovalainen has yet to confirm what his plans are for the 2014 F1 season.
