Mercedes powered team's would block double points extension

The start of the 2014 Formula One season is just over a month away and there is already controversy brewing in the paddock. The sports governing body, the FIA announced at the end of last year that for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi double points would be awarded.

The idea was met with criticism from teams, drivers and fans a like however despite objections the rule change was introduced. The change was brought in as a way to ensure that there is no runaway winner of the championship like we had last season when Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing wrapped up both championships early.

It has now emerged that the sports commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone wants to extend the double point's scheme for the final three rounds of the championship so from Austin onwards. According to the media report in the UK however, as the Mercedes powered team's as they have apparently said that they would block such a move.

If the idea does get the green light however they may as well go all out and award double point's for every race on the calendar.

This season, we have the potential like last season with Red Bull for one team to completely dominate the year however with the sport introducing a host of new regulations this season it is unlikely that we will have one team winning everything.

It will take time for the teams to settle into the new regulations and it probably won't be until midway through the season until we find out who has got the new regulations right and that is why I believe that introducing double points for the final three rounds of the season would be a bad idea because it could potentially give one team a huge advantage over their rivals and one of the main reasons for the introducing the new regulations was to level the playing field.
