Nico Rosberg set the fastest time on the opening day of practice at the Interlagos circuit ahead of Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix using a brand new set of the Pirelli P-Zero yellow walled Soft compound tyre's setting a time of 1m 12.123s.
The track temperatures on Friday were extremely high ranging from 34 - 57 degrees. It is expected that the weather conditions will change over the course of the weekend. As a result teams will have to be prepared for the varied conditions particularly during qualifying on Saturday.
Pirelli believe that on average there is a performance gap of 0,8 - 1,0s between the Medium and the Soft compound tyre's,
Over the course of Friday the teams used 69 sets of tyre's (53 on the Medium) and (16 on the Soft). The high number of consecutive laps on the Soft tyre was 22 while 27 consecutive laps were completed on the White walled Medium compound tyre, Speaking following Fridays running Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery statedL
'We started the day seeing a very high influence from the new surface and its interaction with the tyre, but this was changing rapidly as the sessions went on, with strong track evolution.
We’re also seeing that rear tyre is the limiting factor here, and on some occasions, with close to 60 degrees of track temperature, there was some blistering – which is what we envisaged bringing the softer tyre here, when conditions were hot. We’ve got about one second of performance difference between the two compounds, but due to red flag interruptions today we still don’t have a clear indication of the levels of true degradation we’re ultimately going to see. So tomorrow is set to be a very important session.'
