Pirelli Qualifying Report - United States - Circuit of the Americas

(Pirelli Motorsport Media)

Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team's Nico Rosberg will stat Sunday's United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas from pole position having secured his ninth pole position of the season on a brand new set of the Pirelli P-Zero yellow walled Soft tyre setting a time of 1m 36.067s.

All of the drivers in that qualified in the top ten qualified on a brand new set of the Soft compound tyre.

The United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin could be a three stop strategy which Pirelli believes is theoretically the fastest option for the 56 lap race. Pirelli say to start the race on the Soft tyre before switching to another set of the Soft compound tyre on lap 12.

The second stop will be made on lap 25 switching to the Soft tyre again on lap 25 before finishing the race on a set of the white walled Medium compound tyre from lap 38.

Pirelli say the fastest two stop strategy is to start the race on the Soft and changing to the Medium compound tyre on lap 14 and the Medium compound tyre on lap 35. For those starting the race outside the top ten, start the race on the Medium compound tyre before switching to the Soft on lap 22 before switching to the medium again on lap 36.

Speaking following Saturday's action, Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery stated:

'If I had to describe qualifying in one word it would be ‘quick.’ The increased speed compared to 2013 comes not just from the softer compounds we are using this year, but also from the fact that the teams are really getting the most out of the cars as we approach the end of the season.

As expected, thermal degradation is going to be one of the key factors here, which opens up a few different opportunities in terms of strategy. Nonetheless, we think that most teams will opt for two stops, although a ‘sprint strategy’ would favour a three-stopper. With the way that qualifying has panned out, we should be in for a very interesting race tomorrow.'
