Increase in tyre performance in Australia - Pirelli Report

(Pirelli Motorsport Media)

The Rolex Australian Grand Prix took place on Sunday with Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Lewis Hamilton putting a one stop strategy to good use taking victory.

The double world champion started the race on a set of the Soft compound tyre before switching to the Medium tyre on lap 25. Both the Sauber F1 Team’s Marcus Ericsson and Scuderia Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen were the highest placed 2 stoppers.

Speaking about the race Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery stated:

As expected Australia was a tough race for the teams, but the tyres delivered everything that was asked. The cool conditions and early safety car period meant that the faster two-stop strategy turned into a one-stop for most of the competitors. As well as a top performance from the established frontrunners, we saw some extremely accomplished drives from the rookies this year, who have clearly got on top of the 2015 tyres and strategy options in a very short space of time.

Sahara Force India’s Sergio ‘Checco’ Perez completed the longest stint on the Medium compound tyre completing 38 laps while McLaren Honda’s Jenson Button completed 27 laps on the Soft compound tyre.
