Mercedes Non Executive chairman Niki Lauda has stated that the paddock was surprised by Sebastian Vettel's announcement this morning that he will leaving Red Bull at the end of the season. The Austrian, speaking to Sky Sports F1 HD stated that Alonso was released by Ferrari on Thursday and that is why Vettel confirmed the news to Red Bull last night as he was waiting for Alonso to roll the dice.

There has been absolutely no word from Ferrari regarding Christian Horner's comments that Vettel is going to Ferrari and when asked about where he will be going next season Vettel was himself keeping his cards close to his chest as all he would say is that he will still be in Formula One next season.

Sky Sports F1 HD commentator Martin Brundle believes that by allowing Red Bull to announce what their plans are for next season that Alonso may have left himself high and dry in relation to next season.

Alonso said following qualifying that he main focus remains Ferrari for this race and that he has known for a number of months what direction he wants to take with his Formula One future.
