The McLaren Mercedes duo of Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen had a mixed day in qualifying for tomorrow's Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. Button will start the race from 4th place on the grid which was the 2009 world champion's best qualifying result since he started from third place at the British Grand Prix in July.
For Kevin Magnussen however it it was a disappointing session as following this morning's final free practice session the team were forced to change the gearbox in the Dane's MP4-29 which meant that he went into qualifying this afternoon knowing that he would take a five place grid penalty into the race.
He did a great job to finish the session in 6th place and will therefore start the race from eleventh place which should give him a good chance to score some points as the team hope to jump back ahead of the Sahara Force India Formula One team who are in fifth place, one point ahead of the Woking based outfit.
Speaking following the session Button stated that after making set up changes from yesterday ahead of qualifying that the car just was not working the way that he had wanted. The 2009 world champion is hopeful that he will be in a position to challenge Valtteri Bottas off the line.
Kevin Magnussen like Button felt that the team went the wrong way in terms of the set-up on the MP4-29 and felt that he didn't get anything out of Free Practice 3. Despite this however, Magnussen is hopeful that they will be able to get a strong result from the race however he is expecting it to be tough.
Tomorrow's race is expected to be dry as Formula One embarks on a new journey with the inaugural Russian Grand Prix.
