Wolff concerned double points will overshadow championship battle

Mercedes Executive Director (Business) Toto Wolff believes that the double points being awarded for the season finale in Abu Dhabi later this month has the potential to overshadow what has been a fantastic season long battle between his two drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The Austrian's comments come after Lewis Hamilton stormed to his tenth victory of the season at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on Sunday to head to the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend with a 24 point advantage over Rosberg in the race for the championship. Rosberg started the US Grand Prix from pole position however Hamilton made better use of his tyre's to take the by 4.3s from Rosberg.

Hamilton's win was his fifth in succession following a phenomenal run as he has won every race from the Italian Grand Prix onwards.

It is the second time this season that the 2008 world champion has fought back to overtake Rossberg in the championship.

Wolff stated that they know why the double points were introduced to make it more spectacular for the fans but for the Brackley based outfit who have just their drivers in the running for the championship double points could swing the championship in favour one of their drivers over the other.

Following the teams tenth 1-2 of the season Mercedes have now equaled McLaren's record from the 1988 season.

Wolff is usually one who is not interested in statistics however he is hopeful that with two races to go this season that the Brackley based outfit could break McLaren's record as it would remind him of years gone by.
