Organizers of the Azwerbaijan Grand Prix have confirmed that the country will make its Formula One debut in Baku in 2016 after signing a contact with Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone. The race in Baku had been scheduled to take place next season but will instead go ahead in 2016.
Azerbaijan's Minister for Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov commented:
'I am delighted to officially announce that we have signed a contract to bring Formula 1 racing to Baku in 2016, Our location at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia is a new frontier for Formula 1 racing. Azerbaijan is a modern European country that has established a reputation as a centre of sporting excellence.'
The news comes just a day after it was announced that Mexico city will return to the Formula One calendar next season. Speaking about the addition of Azerbaijan to the F1 calendar Bernie Ecclestone said:
'We are very happy that Baku has joined the Formula 1 family. This will be a street race, which will pass through interesting and picturesque parts of Baku.'
The new circuit will be designed by Formula One circuit designer Hermann Tilke.
