Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has said that he is concerned by the poor attendance at the German Grand Prix so far. The race on Sunday is by means a sell out event and Wolff whose team and driver's are currently leading both of the championships.
It has been suggested that the attendance figures for Sunday's race will be in the region of 50,000 spectators. Wolff said:
'I’m not sure whether we have the exact number for Sunday already, there are lots of people probably deciding short notice depending on the weekend, then we have to analyse the phenomenon. If the weekend continues like it does now we need to think about it.'
Wolff said that as a sport Formula One needs to understand why the spectator numbers differ so much when comes to Free Practice on a Friday at venues like Silverstone or the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
It had been suggested earlier this season that in order to cut costs in Formula One the sport could introduce two day race weekend's giving teams an extra day to arrive at the track. However the idea was thrown out at a meeting of World Motorsport Council.
It will be interesting to see what the sport comes up with in relation to attracting bigger crowds to the circuit for the Friday action. Formula One Grand Prix should always be held over three day's. Friday to Sunday.
