Andrea De Cesaris killed in motorbike accident

Former Formula One driver Andrea De Cesaris has died. The 55 year old Italian who drove in Formula One from 1980 until 1994. Italian media report that he on his motorbike in Rome on Sunday when the crash happened. 

The Italian made his Formula One debut in 1980 with Alfa Romeo where he competed in two race's for the Italian marque before moving on to McLaren in 1981.

De Cesaris returned to Alfa Romeo for a second stint from from 1982-83. The Italian took his sole Formula One pole position at the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix. He achieved one fastest lap at the 1983 Monaco Grand Prix. 

De Cesaris joined Ligier in 1984 and stayed until the end of the 1985 season before moving to Minardi for one season in 1986.

In 1987 the Italian moved to the Brabham team before a stint with the Rial team in 1988. In 1989 he moved to Scuderia Italia where he spent two seasons. He joined the Jordan team for their debut season in 1991 and helped the team to finish in 6th place in the championship.

He moved to the Tyrrell team in 1992 where he spent two season's before returning to Jordan filling in for the banned Eddie Irvine before moving to the Sauber F1 Team for part of the season.

Over the course of his career the Italian entered 214 Grand Prix, competing in 208 race's. He finished on the podium five times and collected 59 points.
