(Pirelli Motorsport Media)

Lewis Hamilton lead the way in this afternoon's Free Practice 2 session on a brand new set of the Pirelli P-Zero White walled Medium compound tyre's ahead of Sunday afternoon's Japanese Grand Prix. Hamilton, who leads the championship by three points from team Nico Rosberg set a benchmark time of 1m 35.078s ending the session just ahead of team mate Nico Rosberg who set his lap time of 1m 35.3.18s on a set of brand new medium compound tyres. Williams Martini Racing Team's Valtteri Bottas  finished the session in third place on a brand new set of the Medium compound tyre's.

A total of 87 set of tyre's were used over the course of Friday with 67 sets of the orange Hard compound tyre's used while just 20 sets of the Medium compound tyre's were used.

The most number of consecutive laps completed on Medium compound tyre's were 20 while 22 consecutive laps were completed on the Harder compound. Speaking about today's running Pirelli motorsport Director Paul Hembery commented:

'After the first day of running there have been no big surprises from our end: instead the question marks are all about the weather. And obviously the tyre use is going to be very much dictated by that.

This is one of the most demanding circuits of the year for the tyres as they are constantly cornering, accelerating or braking: there is no real respite anywhere on the lap. Despite these significant demands, we’re still expecting two to three pit stops for most drivers under normal circumstances, while wear and degradation are still very much within the limits we would expect. Graining has been extremely contained as well: almost negligible. Only one thing is for sure, which is that there’s a lot more to come from this weekend.'
