Formula One should revert to using V8 engines as cost of new power units were partially to blame for two teams going out of business

Infiniti Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner believes that Formula One should consider returning to the era of the V8 as a way of cutting costs in the sport.

Formula One made the switch to the more energy efficient 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged power units which were extremely costly to development for the 2014 season and as a result the cost of power unit supplies have been extremely costly to the smaller teams and has been seen as one of the main factors that according to Horner resulted in the demise of the Caterham and Marussia F1 teams.

Horner stated:

'Nobody likes to go backwards, but sometimes you have got to look.' Horner believes the right thing to do is to allow a window that would enable Renault and Ferrari to catch up to Mercedes. However the Red Bull boss has stated that then would not be fair to Mercedes.

The Red Bull boss has however admitted that his idea of Formula One resurrecting the 2.4 litre V8 engines is 'far-fetched'.

The Caterham F1 Team who are currently in administration are seeking funding from fans and sponsors alike to enable them to go racing next weekend at the season finale in Abu Dhabi owe engine supplier Renault a reported £7.4 million.

The Leafield based outfit have until Friday to raise the £2.35 million which would enable them to race at Yas Marina Circuit and have passed the half way mark in the pledging that they have received.

It has also been reported that the Marussia F1 Team are in negotiations with one serious buyer for the Banbury based outfit.
