Big budgets not necessary to compete at the front in F1

(Williams Martini Racing)

Williams Martini Racing's deputy team principal Claire Williams does not believe that the small teams don't need massive budgets to be in a position to challenge the front running outfits. During winter testing the Grove based squad who have made the switch to Mercedes engines for this season showed that they were extremely competitive. Felipe Massa even set the fastest lap of the final winter test in Bahrain.

Williams believes that with the changes that have been made within the team will enable them to challenge for race wins this season as they are 'bored of losing' The teams last victory came at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix with Pastor Maldonado who has left the team to join Lotus.

She also said that she believes that the engine that new partner Mercedes delivered has played a major role in the team having a successful winter testing programme. The new engine has proven to be the strongest on the grid. Williams also have a new title sponsor in Martini and this is a major boost for the team.

The team finished the 2013 F1 season in 9th place managing to pick up only 5 points finishing just ahead of the Marussia and the Caterham F1 Team's. The team also have a new driver with Felipe Massa joining from Ferrari. His former race engineer Rob Smedley has also joined the team.

Speaking about the Williams team Felipe has stated that the new Mercedes engine partnership was 'a good change'

It will be interesting to see how the team get on this weekend. Their aim according to Claire Williams is to score points in every race this season.
