Jenson Button was delighted finishing today's qualifying session for the British Grand Prix in third place, his best qualifying performance of the season so far. The 2009 champion's performance on Saturday came at the perfect time for Button who was told by McLaren CEO Ron Dennis earlier this week 'to up his game'. Button is out of contract with the Wolking based outfit this season and has yet to agree terms with the outfit over extending his stay with the team into next season when the team switch to Honda engine's next season.
This weekend see's fans wearing 'Pink For Papa' t-shirts in memory of Button's father John who passed away in January. He was also present as part of Jenson's team and wore pink shirts at Grand Prix and to celebrate his fathers memory Button is using a specially commissioned 'pink for papa' helmet with papa smurf on the helmet.
Speaking after qualifying Button said:
'It was quite an emotional slowing down lap, Qualifying is qualifying and the race is tomorrow, but when you do a lap you are happy with in front of your home crowd, I think the old boy would be very happy - it would have meant a lot. I have so much support from the fans, it has been overwhelming, a lot of people wearing pink in respect of my old boy. He is definitely smiling down on me.'
Button is refusing to get carried away by his and the McLaren teams strong performance today and has admitted that the team will find it tricky to challenge for a podium if the race is dry tomorrow but he believes that anything is possible provided that they make the right strategy calls during the race.
Button is currently in eighth place in the Driver's championship on 43 point's so he will be hoping for a big haul of points in the race tomorrow.
