(Williams Martini Racing)
Sergio Perez has apologised to Williams Martini Racing's Susie Wolff after the Mexican Sahara Force India driver told Spanish TV that he would not like a female driver as a team mate saying: that women were: 'better to stay in the kitchen' Perez described Wolff as 'a great driver' but followed that up by saying:
'Imagine being beaten by a woman.'
Perez later took to his website issuing a statement saying:
'I feel really ashamed by the way my words have been distorted about the opportunity of racing side by side with a woman, I want to be absolutely clear that my intention was not to offend anybody, and my comment does not reflect a 'macho' posture on my behalf. I recognise that my comment, even though it was intended as a joke, was absolutely out of place and also unacceptable.'
The Mexican went on to say:
'With Susie Wolff I hold a very close friendship and I admire her greatly for her determination; I wish her the best of luck as a person and as a professional driver.'
Wolff took to her Twitter page to defend Perez telling fans to give him a break following criticism of the Sahara Force India driver. She said:
'His comments were taken completely out of context. Anyway, as my family will tell you, I drive better than I cook!'
Wolff will be back behind the wheel of the FW36 during Free Practice One for the next race, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. When asked by the BBC whether Wolff would get another Free Practice run following her outing in Germany deputy team principal Claire Williams said that there were no plans for Susie to have another run at a Grand Prix weekend this season as the team also want to give their other test driver, Felipe Nasr some mileage in the car.
