Formula Renault 3.5 and Red Bull backed driver Carlos Sainz Jr has confirmed that he has held talks with the Caterham F1 Team in relation to the 19 year old Spaniard gaining a Formula One race seat with the Leafield based outfit. It was announced prior to the start of British Grand Prix in Silverstone that Caterham team has bee sold to a Swiss/Middle Eastern consortium.
It is believed that the outfit could replace either one of their existing driver's Kamui Kobayashi or Marcus Ericsson this season. Red Bull and Caterham are linked as the reigning world champions supply the team with gearboxes. Speaking to AS is Spain, Sainz Jr said he has held talks with the team, he said:
'Yes it is true that there have been talks but there is nothing confirmed, This does not change anything because my goal remains the same: to be with Toro Rosso in the future. If for that to happen I pass through Caterham then I will do so happily.'
Sainz confirmed that he could potentially race in Formula One this season however that the final decision will come from Red Bull. He also said that the decision has to be of benefit to both the Caterham F1 Team and to Red Bull.
Sainz also confirmed that his aim is to drive with Toro Rosso but if driving for the Caterham F1 Team helps him to secure a seat with Toro Rosso he would be happy with that.
