Formula One could be on the verge of a return to South
Africa for the first time since 1993. World champion Lewis Hamilton’s father
Anthony is behind the idea of race taking place in Cape Town.
The proposal has gained momentum and now Mr Hamilton has received
the full support from Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.
The Formula One boss has revealed that has wanted the sport to return to South
Africa for many years and is hopeful that a race could take place as soon as
next year.
Anthony Hamilton has been looking at the possibility of a
Grand Prix event in Cape Town for the last year. Mr Ecclestone has confirmed
that talks are currently underway to process proposed terms with the organisers
of the race.
If a race in South
Africa does indeed go ahead next year it would be the return of a second
country coming back into Formula One as Mexico City returns to the calendar
this season.
