Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo fully believes that he can challenge for the 2015 Formula One championship. The Australian’s comments come as the team’s prepare to begin winter testing at the Jerez circuit in Spain this weekend.

Ricciardo finished the 2014 Formula One season in third place behind the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The Australian was the only driver other than a Mercedes driver to win a race taking three victories in Canada, Hungary and Belgium. Ricciardo moves up to the role of lead driver at the Milton Keynes based outfit after Sebastian Vettel joined Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari for 2015.

Ricciardo is joined at Red Bull this season by Daniil Kvyat who makes the move up from Scuderia Toro Rosso after just one year in Formula One.

Ricciardo is not concerned by the tag of number one driver as he stated that if the Kvyat is faster than him throughout the year he will be the team number one. The Australian is focussed on completing a productive test programme in the RB11 that will enable them to close the gap to Mercedes from the first race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo also stated that he won’t be keeping anything from Kvyat in terms of the development of the car as for the sake of the team they need to be open.

The new RB11 will revealed in the Jerez pit-lane on Sunday morning prior to the start of the first four day test at the Spanish circuit.
