Formula One’s new era of 1.6 litre V6 turbo charged power
units has brought with it a new fan base according to Malaysian Grand Prix
organiser Razlan Razali.
Razali confirmed that the circuit were very concerned last
year following feedback from the Australian Grand Prix organisers, however when
it came to their own race weekend they discovered that the new era of Formula
One had attracted more families to the circuit for the entire Grand Prix
weekend.
Razali stated that although he wasn’t happy with the new
sound of Formula One he was happy as it has attracted ‘a new breed of fan base’.
The 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix proved to be extremely
exciting as it resulted in the first of many 1-2 finishes for the Mercedes AMG
PETRONAS F1 Team with Lewis Hamilton securing his first of eleven Grand Prix
victories.
Razali’s comments contradict those of Formula One commercial
rights holder Bernie Ecclestone who stated that Formula One does not need young
fans as they cannot afford to attend Grand Prix however if families attend
Grand Prix together it will secure young fans and once they get a taste of the
sport they will become life time fans.
