New 18'' tyre's tough for the teams says Pic

(Pirelli Motorsport Media)

Charles Pic has said that teams will find it tough to adapt to Pirelli's new 18'' tyre after the Frenchman became the first Formula One driver to test the new rubber developed by the Italian firm when he ran the prototype tyre on the Lotus F1 Team's E22 in Silverstone on Wednesday morning.

Speaking after carrying out a run of 14 laps on the tyre Pic said:

'If we go one day to this sort of tyre it would be a big challenge for the teams because they will need to build a completely new car around it and it will be a challenge for the drivers because they are different.

They are very different. The overall grip was very low and we were off the pace mainly because the car is built for the type of tyre we are racing now rather than the 18-inch tyre and the car is not working well around this tyre. And as this was the first time we ran the tyres, Pirelli were very conservative with pressure and the pace they asked for because the main goal was to give data.'

Pic was asked about the feeling of the tyre to which he replied:

'Honestly, I thought they were too big but then it was the first time that I had seen them!'
