Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel has admitted that he is unsure if Infiniti Red Bull Racing will be able to mount a challenge to the Mercedes AMG F1 Team next season. The German has endured a difficult start to the defense of his Formula One title and has so far only managed two podium finishes as he has struggled with the set-up of the new RB10.
The quadruple world champion was i action in Silverstone yesterday where he was testing on behalf of Pirelli. When asked if Red Bull can fight Mercedes next season Vettel said:
'It's difficult to say, right now the gap is very big and we didn't really close it since the first race. We have tried lots of things to improve but they do the same thing. We need bigger steps of development to close the gap even more. I think at the end of the season we can judge a bit better what to do in the winter.
The German is currently 95 points behind championship leader, Mercedes Nico Rosberg and 28 points behind Red Bull team mate Daniel Ricciardo.
Vettel is hopeful that he will be in a position to challenge for a podium finish in Hockeheim. He is hopeful of getting the best performance out of the RB10 after finishing the British Grand Prix in 5th place behind Jenson Button and team mate Daniel Ricciardo.
In the last three Grand Prix Vettel has had a third place finish, a DNF and a fifth place finish. The German will be hoping to close the gap to his team mate Daniel Ricciardo at next weekend's German Grand Prix.
