Special feature - The changing face of F1's engine race

(Mercedes AMG F1 Team)

We are only nine race's into the 2014 Formula One season but the 2015 season already looks like a mouth watering prospect. There is going to be a number of changes that are sure to see a further shake up in the order.

This season has seen the Williams Martin Racing Team return to the front with the help of a new engine partner after the Grove based outfit joined forces with Mercedes after three year's with Renault engines. The team have seen a dramatic improvement in their performances and are now up to fourth place in the Constructors championship just three point's behind Ferrari in third.

It was announced over the course of the British Grand Prix weekend that the Lotus F1 Team will end their log term relationship with Renault in favor of a taking up a supply deal with Mercedes Benz. The German marques power unit has emerged as the class of the field so far in 2015 having taken eight of nine Grand Prix victories so far.

The 2015 season is also set to be a massive season for the McLaren team as they too will switch engine supplier as they reacquaint themselves with Japanese manufacturer Honda with whom the Woking based squad enjoyed incredible success with during the late 1980's. In fact, McLaren were the last Honda powered outfit to the win the championship during the last turbo charged era of Formula One when Ayrton Senna won the 1988 world championship.

McLaren will be hoping that they will be in a position to challenge for the championship with the support of Honda.

As for the Lotus F1 Team, they have provided Mercedes with the necessary assurances in relation to the financial situation of the team that the German company made the agreement with the team although we are still waiting to hear about the finer details of that agreement.

It is absolutely fantastic to see another engine supplier in Formula One and due to their previous experience in developing turbocharged engine's it can be expected that Honda will hit the ground running next season particularly with the resources that McLaren have at their disposal at the Woking HQ, the McLaren Technology Centre.

Honda also have the added benefit like Mercedes being based in the UK as the Japanese company will prepare McLaren's engines in Milton Keynes just over an hour away from the McLaren Technology Centre. McLaren are also looking into the possibility of running the new Honda engine at a special test at the end of the 2014 season. However any such test would require the agreement of all of the other team's and this seems unlikely as the Lotus F1 Team could potentially be looking for a similar test themselves due to the restrictions in place when it comes preseason testing.

As it stands Mercedes have the edge in the engine department however this could change next season once the Renault and Ferrari powered outfits have gotten on top of their engine's but one thing is for certain and that is with the addition of Honda next season Formula One is going to be even more exciting in 2015 so get ready everyone, we are set for an extremely interesting DRIVE as a number of teams embark on a new journey!! BRING ON 2015!!
