Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve has described
Williams Martini Racing Team’s resurgence in 2014 as ‘better than expected.’
The Grove based outfit had their best season in years in 2014 which saw them
finish in third place in the championship ahead of Scuderia Ferrari with the
help of a new power unit in the form of Mercedes.
Villeneuve had previously criticised his former team for
resorting to hiring so called ‘pay’ drivers like Pastor Maldonado. Villeneuve,
who won his Formula One championship with the Williams team in 1997 has now
rowed back on his criticism.
Speaking to Revista
Warm Up, the Canadian who lasted raced in Formula One in 2006 stated that
the Grove based outfit exceeded his expectations in 2014.

Over the course of
the 2014 Formula One season, Williams Martini Racing scored nine podium
finishes with Valtteri Bottas scoring six of them with Felipe Massa scoring
three podiums.
The team secured their first double podium finish at the
season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Felipe Massa finished in second with
Bottas in third.
Villeneuve stated that the Williams team ‘turned
a tide’ in 2014. He believes that Formula One will have to wait and see
if the Williams Martini Racing Team can continue their upward trend this
season.
