Massa tops day one of Silverstone test

Felipe Massa put the disappointment of retiring from the British Grand Prix by setting the fastest time of the opening day of the Silverstone in-season test for Williams Martini Racing. The Brazilian set a time of 1m 35.242s to end the day 0.006s ahead of Infiniti Red Bull Racing's Daniel Ricciardo. Massa completed 42 laps for the Grove based outfit.

Daniel Ricciardo was second fastest for Infinti Red Bull Racing. The Australian completed 71 laps with a fastest time of 1m 35.248s.

Mercedes AMG F1 Team's Nico Rosberg ended the day in third place and completed 89 laps and will hand over the W05 to team mate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton who will see out the test for the Brackley based outfit. Adrian Sutil set the fourth fastest time for the Sauber F1 Team on his way to completing 73 laps.

It was fantastic day for the Marussia F1 Team's Jules Bianchi who completed 108 laps for the Banbury based outfit finishing the day i fifth place. The Frenchman, who is part of Ferrari's Young Driver Programme will now swap the cockpit of his Marussia for the Ferrari F14-T has he has been called up to drive in place of the injured Kimi Raikkonen after the Italian team chose to rest the Finn following his huge crash in Silverstone at the weekend.

McLaren young driver Stoffel Vandoorne completed 71 laps and ended the day 1.220s behind Massa. Sahara Force India's Sergio Perez was 7th fastest for the Silverstone based outfit and completed 79 laps in the VJM07.

Jean Eric Vergne finished the session in 8th place for Toro Rosso. The Frenchman completed just 28 laps, the least of any driver on day one.

Pastor Maldonado was ninth for the Lotus F1 Team as the Venezuelan completed 94 laps for the Enstone based outfit. He ended the day 1.889s behind Massa with a fastest time of 1m 37.131s. The Lotus F1 Team will now spend tomorrow's session testig Pirelli's new prototype 18'' tyre.

Pedro Dela Rosa was 10th fastest for the Ferrari as the Italian team along with Marussia carried out testing work on behalf of Pirelli. Infiniti Red Bull Racing and the Lotus F1 Team will run the Pirelli test tomorrow.

Rounding out the time sheets today was the Caterham F1 Team's academy driver Will Stevens who completed 94 laps but was 5.385s if the time set by Felipe Massa in the Williams.

Testing concludes tomorrows.
