FIA introduces new Super Licence points system for prospective Formula One drivers to be introduced in 2016

(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team)

The FIA have confirmed that from 2016 onwards they will introduce a new points system for drivers hoping to enter Formula One.

In order to compete in Formula One, all drivers must hold a FIA Super Licence and from next season in order to eligible to apply the licence drivers must be
  • Over the age of 18
  • Have accumulated 40 points in a three year period competing in junior motor racing categories.
  • Hold a valid road car licence
  • A driver must complete 300KM in a modern Formula One car
  • Drivers must pass a test on the Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Unlike in the previous years, winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Series will not be enough to allow drivers to obtain a Super Licence. The FIA have confirmed that if a driver finishes in the top two in the GP2 championship they will automatically be eligible for a Super Licence.
